Written by 3D Max on February 9th, 2010

First and foremost.. your welcome AM for posting this despite not having to.. Secondly…. 200 plus subscribers!!! I had been thinking of a way to thank you all for your support, so I figured this tutorial was a good one to say thank you to you all!! Except those of you who think you are entitled to my lessons.. there’s only one of you who does that.. everyone else is pretty grateful.. to which i respond by being equally grateful… thank you all so much, those of you who appreciate what I do.. because of you I’ve had many opportunities come my way, and I really appreciate you all! I can’t believe it’s been a year already!!

Great tutorial. I wanted to ask how you keep the displacement map moving along with the model? When I animate my character the model moves, but the dsplacement does not. The result is that the character moves & the map stays in the same place.

It may be the format you are exporting. You need to export them as TIFF.

Alas, I do not, but I have a lot of friends who work in the effects industry.. I’d like to some day, but I have no idea how to get into it. I just know how hard it is to learn something on your own and want to help out anyone willing to help themselves.

i did exactly what you said..
but when ever i import my obj to max ,it gives an error like this “missing maps ,maps search didn’t find jagafter.bmp”
and when i skip this part ..my object becomes glossy (toy plastic look)and when i render it..it renders at the lowest sub division not at lvl7(highest). do u know whats wrong?
i’ve searched but ders no “jagafter.bmp” in my computer..

I read somewhere that normal maps work best if the mesh is one polygroup. looks smoother at least. thanks for making the tutorials.

That means a lot to me, friend. In the past year I’ve come across only one ungrateful person who actually seemed to think I owed him tutorials or something.. and when I wouldn’t play by his rules he insulted me.. fortunately it was just one out of 203 people. :)
