Written by 3D Max on March 14th, 2010

Here you’ll find an overview of the 3D texture tool bodypaint 3D, which is used for texturing 3D models in films and games such as Spider-Man 3, The Incredible Hulk and The Outsider. Works with 3ds max, CINEMA 4D, lightwave, Maya, softimage XSI and more.

If you do any change on the UV layout, obviously the UV coordinates will be in a different position over the map file. The normal Workflow is to do a custom UV layout and then proceed to painting, either on BP3d or Photoshop. You should use the Automatic UV tool in the case you won’t use PS, only tools like BP3D. This is because a customized UV layout is thought to make easier its edition on PS.

here is a question, let say I create a model in Maya, and I don’t unwrap the UVs(= use automatic uv layout tool!). Is it possible to paint on the model in BP3D and later on customize a new UV layout and assign it to the same object and then continue painting in BP3D? will the paintings remain where-ever they were on the object?

Ive downloaded the Demo for BP 3.5

I have a lightwave model I would like to paint. I have the UV set up in LW.

How do I use that UV to paint. I have one object mesh with 5 materials assigned to various parts of the mesh

I use the wizard and uncheck recalculate UV but it does it any,,,,

It’s for either platform. For windows it’ll work on Vista 64 bit or 32 bit and on XP. On Mac it’s made for Leopard 64 bit.

is bodypaint only for mac or windows as well?

So, for video post production or any other CGI, UVW unrapping(manual) is not necessary at all?

Projection painting is awesome if you hate UV mapping as you don’t even need a nice UV map to texture. BodyPaint will just automatically warp what you’re painting so it looks good to the camera. This is used in all industries aside from Games. In games apparently if your UVs are split it hinders games performance. But any other industry it doesn’t matter what the UVs look like :-) ))
